Every weekend, we offer an Afternoon Tea Service that all day long. Freshly baked scones and danishes with clotted cream and local jams, not to mention delicious tea. And to top it all off, an artisanal chocolate before you leave. We are bringing the English Style Afternoon Tea to Halifax. But what is Afternoon Tea?
What a lot of people call "High Tea", is actually considered "Afternoon Tea" - a fancy tea with scones, clotted cream and finger sandwiches. It is thought to have been brought to England or at least popularized by the Portuguese Anna, 7th Duchess of Bedford in the early 1800's. It was an aristocratic treat and became all the rage, becoming an integral part of the English image. High Tea on the other hand, which people so often confuse with Afternoon Tea, was a meal that developed out of the lengthy shift work of the factory workers. Rather than scones and finger sandwiches, High Tea consisted of hardy stews and meats. It was a meal consumed ate supper time to replenish the calories and spirit after a long and draining day of work.
